Once a Fergussonian, always a Fergussonian…
This is not a mere catchline but a fact of life that anyone connected with Fergusson College as a student, staff member or alumnus is bound to have experienced. The brand value that the name carries both on the national and international levels is no secret or myth. As we know, Fergusson College was established during the peak period of the Indian Renaissance to build amongst Indians a sense of self-esteem and a desire for national identity in their struggle against the British. We have endeavoured to keep intact the values given by our founders such as Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Vishnushastri Chiplunkar and Mahadev Ballal Namjoshi while providing high-quality education. This is the reason why Fergusson College has been able to attract the best minds to itself. The reputation it enjoys owes much to the presence of Fergussonians in all walks of life from academics to administration, industry, sports, journalism, fine arts, politics and community service. It is to draw upon this wonderful pool of human resources and strengthen the network further that we felt compelled to establish this new association, viz. “Fergusson College Alumni Association” under section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013.
The institution has not rested on its past glory alone but brought in a blend of the traditional and the modern by adding a plethora of new programs having contemporary relevance such as Biotechnology, Computer Science and its allied fields such as Computer Applications and Data Sciences, Environmental Science, Microbiology, Bachelor of Vocation and the Liberal Arts. During the last two decades, it has consistently obtained the ‘A’ grade during the assessment done by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC), with the latest CGPA score in 2016 being 3.62. It has also been granted College of Excellence status and received funding under several UGC and HRD ministry schemes such as DBT, DST FIST, RUSA, STRIDE, etc. Its brand-name and reputation as also its quality initiatives have also helped the college to establish collaborations with other academic institutions, as well as with industries in and around Pune. Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) have also been signed with institutions of international repute such as Penn State University (USA), Cork University (Ireland), University of Sorbonne (France) and Jagiellonian University (Poland). The Autonomous status that the college received in 2016 has given greater flexibility and diversity to all the academic programs and activities on the campus.
We are confident that our alumni can contribute to all these endeavours through their active involvement. The establishment of the Alumni association through the structured mechanism provided by the Company Act can provide the foundation needed to make the relationship between the institution and its alumni mutually beneficial. It can also offer the perfect launching pad and platform needed to give concrete shape to our future plans such as establishment of a Skill Development centre, an Incubation centre for Transdisciplinary Research, and explore the possibility of different business propositions by offering Consultancy services and enabling entrepreneurial activities that can contribute to the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives promoted by the Central government.
